Types of competitor monitoring tools
Updated November 2, 2026
There are three main kinds. General page-change monitors alert you to any change on any web page. Price intelligence platforms match and track large catalogues, often with automatic repricing, and are built for bigger retailers. Daily offer trackers, like EcomWatchdog, follow a handful of competitors' key pages and summarise only the commercial changes in plain words. For a small store that wants to know about competitors' sales, codes, launches and key prices, an offer tracker is usually the simplest fit.
1. General page-change monitors
- What they do: watch any page you choose and tell you when its content changes.
- Good for: flexibility, and pages that aren't stores.
- Watch out for: noise. Any change counts, so rotating products and wording edits trigger alerts too, and you work out what each one means.
2. Price intelligence platforms
- What they do: find the same products across many competitors and track their prices at scale, often feeding automatic repricing.
- Good for: retailers with large catalogues who reprice often.
- Watch out for: setup and cost, which typically assume a large catalogue; they focus on prices more than promotions and launches.
3. Daily offer trackers
- What they do: follow each competitor's key pages (homepage, sale, new arrivals, shipping) and chosen products, and report meaningful commercial changes in plain words.
- Good for: small and growing stores that want to know what competitors are doing without reading pages themselves.
- Watch out for: they check on a schedule (EcomWatchdog once a day) and cover key pages, not every page of a store.
How to choose
- Do you need to change your own prices automatically? Then a price intelligence platform.
- Do you want alerts on pages that aren't stores, or on any change at all? Then a general page-change monitor.
- Do you want a short summary of competitors' sales, codes, launches and key prices? Then a daily offer tracker.
- Also weigh how many competitors and products you follow, and how much time you have to read alerts.
Where EcomWatchdog fits
EcomWatchdog is a daily offer tracker for ecommerce stores. EcomWatchdog reads each competitor's homepage, sale, new-arrivals and shipping pages, plus the product pages you choose, once a day around midnight US Central. It compares each page with the night before, and a short update is written for each meaningful change: what it was before, what it is now, and the exact wording from their page. Every update is checked against the page before it is saved. It doesn't change your own prices.
What it can't see
- It reads public pages only: not prices behind a login, in a cart or at checkout, or offers sent only by email or text message.
- Some stores block automated visits. Their pages can't be read, and the app says so instead of reporting "no change".
- Prices are what a visitor in the US sees, for the product option in the link you add.
- Checks run once a day, so a change made and undone between two checks can be missed.
- History starts when you add a store; it can't show what changed before that.
EcomWatchdog is a competitor price and promotion tracker for small stores: it follows the products and pages you choose and emails you when something changes. See the competitor price tracker.
Questions
- Can I combine tools?
- Yes. Some stores use an offer tracker for competitors' promotions and launches, and a separate tool for automatic repricing.
- Is a daily check fast enough?
- For most promotions, yes: they usually run for days or weeks. If you need to react within the hour, a daily tool isn't the right fit.
